Tempesta Recognized as U.S. Kids Golf Top 50 Kids Teacher

ATLANTA – Kate Tempesta of New York, N.Y., is among the class of the Top 50 Kids Teachers for 2012, as announced by U.S. Kids Golf. Tempesta has been a junior golf instructor for six years and is currently the owner of Kate Tempesta’s Urban Golf Academy. This is the second time that she has been named a Top 50 Kids Teacher by U.S. Kids Golf. “I am truly honored to be recognized by a company committed to the growth of children and the game of golf,” Tempesta said. “I am very, very lucky to be doing what I love so much.”

On Instruction & Joy

It has been a wonderful summer—sun, air, water, smiles—and, of course, lots of PLAY and lots of learning. The summer has reinforced so much for me —How incredibly blessed I am to do the work that I do —How wonderful the children I spend time with are. —And how valuable our program is. I was texting with a colleague the other day when she typed this: “Children need to learn to play with joy before they play with technique”. Yes.

Play is Real

I talk a lot about Play and even close my emails with the phrase “PLAY to learn!” It’s so much more than a catchy slogan, or a fun idea--- it works. Recently I discovered Teaching Games For Understanding a concept in the physical education world that utilizes this very idea—that through play we actually absorb concepts and real, true, lasting learning takes place. It’s an idea I’ve known to be true for years and I was so excited to learn that it is part of the dialogue all over the world!
